Why They Lost

As sports fan we spend countless hours doing one thing; lying to ourselves. This is the agreement we make from the first moment we see a professional sporting event. As a fan you have to feel like every game is winnable and every year you team can complete for a championship. That is the best part of the season! The worst part of the season is when you realize that your team is just not good enough.I fear that time is upon us as Eagles fans

Why They Lost

Eagles 24 Detroit Lions 26 (ot)

For the first time all season the Eagles faced an opponent who on defense at least mirrored  what Philadelphia does best: Pressure the Quarterback. It became apparent from the first snap that all the balance in the world was not going to help, as Philadelphia failed to move the ball down field with any ease in the first quarter. The pressure made the Eagles offense look sad and poorly run. A fumble at the end of the first quarter only shined more light on a problem that show no signs of going away, and further stress the issue that our Birds are not ready to contend for a championship this year.

The second period displayed more of the same. Vick and the Eagles would have a few good plays and then either the Lions defensive pressure would slow things down or a miscommunication on offense would derail a promising drive. The only good was the fact that Michael Vick hadn’t threw an interception yet! That was until about halfway through the second quarter Vick tried to throw downfield, but was hit as he threw, leading to the ball being picked off. But as they have done in every game this year, Philadelphia drove right back and this  time they scored, giving our hometown team a 7-6 advantage going into halftime.

The trend this season is for Vick and the Eagles to start games looking poor and then rebound at the start of the second half. This past Sunday held to form. The third quarter began and the Eagles promptly drove down and kicked a field goal. Whatever the protection problems were at the start of the game seemed fixed, as we were able to tack on another field goal making the score 13-6. Even though Philadelphia was not getting touchdowns, the feel was that they were moving the ball and that the Lions could not keep up.

Enter the fourth quarter, now this is the time where the Eagles typically send fighting to get back into game. This past Sunday was a nice change of pace as Philadelphia was up ten whole points! We didn’t even feel that worried when Vick managed to throw another interception midway through the final quarter. In fact the pick did not even result in any points for the Lions, and the Eagles hit on a huge 70 yard touchdown pass to push their back to ten. All that was left was a defensive and Philadelphia would head into the bye week with a win.

Defense is a very tricky thing to maintain, after three really good weeks the Philadelphia’s defense is starting to show some of the cracks that lead to such a poor showing last year. Two weeks ago the Eagles had to face Larry Fitzgerald, he is a receiver who posses rare talent and is one of the top players at his position. The number receiver in the league? That would be the Lions Calvin Johnson.

As a fan you never want to see your team beat by another team’s number one option. Yet time and time again Andy Reid’s teams fall victim to the best player of the opposing team. It cost them a game in Arizona and it cost them last Sunday’s contest. While he was kept out of the endzone everytime Detroit needed a big play he was there to make it happened. Couple that with the inability to sack the Quarterback for the second week in a row. Our Eagles in the fourth quarter were doomed. The Lions lead a furious fourth quarter comeback, lead by Johnson. This unit gave up 17 points in the fourth quarter to a team that has no balance , and no real threat other Calvin Johnson. The fact that we lost this game in overtime after leading by ten points frustrate me to no end. And apparently Andy Reid was just as upset as we found out Tuesday when they fired Defensive coordinator Juan Castro. Firing anyone after  six games in a football season is never good sign. So as the Eagles get ready to go on the bye, we as fans are only left with questions and the sinking feel that this team is just good and not the great team we want them to be.
